Yes, we’re broaching this controversial topic.
I personally feel strongly that education and infrastructure go much further than a dome of foam could…it’s complicated. This discussion is far from over…and may not be for a while, but here’s adding to the “helmet not necessary” side.

I wear a helmet now; it’s a Bern helmet and the only helmet I’ve tried on that is comfortable to wear. Dallas isn’t bike friendly enough yet to not wear a helmet. Dallas drivers are not comfortable with, or respecting of cyclists. In Denton, I never wore a helmet, but the roads are smaller with less and slower traffic. I know that a helmet may not provide sufficient safety to prevent serious injury in a full speed collision with a car, but the closest situations I’ve been in (including a collision with a truck) have actually been relatively low speed. I think Dallas has a very long way to go before I would feel comfortable not wearing a helmet again.

I’m not fond of being required to wear a helmet. Joggers are not required to nor are skaters (inline, boards, whatever) and even motorcyclists can ride helmet free in Dallas. I think in many cases a helmet is a good idea, and I wear one about 50% of the time, depending on where and how fast, It’s the fact that I’m required to is what irritates me. For that matter mothers are supposed to tell us to wear a helmet, not the state.
